BetaCheck is a diabetes-risk management dashboard designed to provide users with a clear, actionable, and visually engaging overview of their health metrics. The project focuses on empowering users by tracking key health data, such as blood glucose levels, blood pressure trends, physical activity, and sleep patterns, in one accessible and streamlined interface.
People managing diabetes or at risk of developing the condition often struggle with fragmented tools which lack cohesiveness in presenting health data. The challenge was to design a dashboard that organizes critical health information in an intuitive way while avoiding overwhelming the user.
The BetaCheck dashboard leverages a modular, card-based layout inspired by the bento box design trend. This structure ensures clarity, prioritises critical metrics, and provides flexibility for adding or modifying information. A calming blue color palette, suggested by a user with diabetes, was used to create a welcoming and diabetes-awareness-oriented interface.
Define and EmpathiseTo begin I analysed existing health dashboards, explored UI trends and user pain points. Through this research I identified opportunities to improve visual clarity and reduce cognitive load. Moodboards inspired by medical design aesthetics and user feedback helped set the visual direction.
The initial sketches were drawn quickly using a black marker, enabling rapid iteration and a focus on structure over details. I decided early on to organize the dashboard into card sections, balancing the number of visualisations to avoid clutter. My sketches also reflected experimentation with trends and layout ideas, culminating in a modular grid inspired by bento boxes.
To enhance the design's user relevance I consulted my nephew, a 21-year-old with type 1 diabetes. His input influenced the choice of blue as the primary color, which reflects diabetes awareness and evokes calmness. This collaboration underscored the importance of user-centered decision-making.
I used a Figma community file for medical dashboards as a foundation to ensure efficient execution. Customising the UI to align with the bento-grid concept, I focused on delivering a visually cohesive and practical layout. The result is a professional, high-quality design that prioritises user needs while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.
The process of making theBetaCheck Dashboard has been both inspiring and challenging. From ideating and sketching, to looking for inspiration and best practices, I have seen a side of design that ends up having meaningful impact on users lives. I´m particularly grateful for the insights I gained from speaking to my nephew and reflecting on the needs of people who on a daily basis manage chronic health conditions. This experience reminded me that good design is about listening, empathising and creating with a purpose. And this can most definitely be done while staying on top of cards and modular bento grids trends.
